3 Cozy Bowl of Porridge to Keep You Warm Throughout Autumn

It’s International Porridge Day…yeah I didn’t even know that was a thing too! The only reason I really knew oatmeal/porridge had a day dedicated to it is because I follow the queen’s of porridge on Instagram known as 26 Grains. 26 Grains if you haven’t heard is a cafe located in the heart of London’s Neal’s Yard, and as you’ve probably guessed it they specialize in all things grains! From fancy avocado toast, to savoury and sweet oats, with grain bowls in between it’s through and through my favourite cafe in the world. We are in the works of planning our next trip to London in December (hopefully!) and I will definitely be a regular customer there. Get the Nordic Pear Porridge and you will not regret it!

World Porridge Day was founded to support “Mary’s Meals” in the United Kingdom. Mary’s Meals is a charitable organization who’s mission is to provide meals in schools for children experiencing the effects of extreme poverty and the difficult hurdles to meet basic needs in developing countries.

Porridge is a universal cozy bowl, and to me is a sensation of hygge when I wrap my hands around a warming bowl in the brisk temperatures that are brought with the season of autumn. It’s cozy, comforting, and hardy which is the trifecta of what I look for in a dish. I’m also part Scottish so I feel as if I am eating back to my roots when I have it in the morning!

I’ve combined 3 of my quick and easy recipes to help you stay warm and cozy with a bowl of oats/porridge (whatever you want to call it!), from pumpkin porridge, savoury porridge, and the classic combo of PB + J. I hope you enjoy!

  • Pumpkin Porridge with Cranberry Sauce

Have cranberry sauce leftovers from thanksgiving? Add it to your pumpkin porridge to round out the earthiness of the bowl.

  • Pumpkin Porridge with Cranberry Sauce

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1 cup almond milk

  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

  • 2-3 tbsp pumpkin purée

  • 1/2 an apple (diced)

  • homemade cranberry sauce (1/2 cup fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup water, 3 Tbsp of maple syrup boiled off for 5-10 minutes and allowed to cool for thickness.)

  • a drizzle of maple syrup

  • a few crushed walnuts for extra crunch

  • Savoury Porridge

Need a quick meal in under five minutes? I know savoury porridge sounds strange but it has a creamy richness like risotto and when paired with nutritional yeast gives a cheesy flavour. I did a collaboration with a local farm-to-table restaurant and this is the very similar if not the exact same recipe we used!

Savoury Porridge

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 2 1/2 cups veggie broth

  • 1/2 tsp granulated garlic

  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast

  • 1/4 tsp cumin

To make: slowly cook the oats over a medium-low heat until I reached desired consistency. (OPTIONAL) Fold in some sautéed cremini mushrooms and purple kale. Top with avocado, sesame seeds, siracha, roasted butternut (1 cup of cubes butternut squash with 1 tbsp avocado oil with 1/2 tsp of paprika on 400 for 20 minutes), and top with fresh chives.

  • PB + J Overnight Porridge

Perfect to whip up when you’re running out the door, make the berry compote up the night before and you are set!

PB +J Overnight Porridge

  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats

  • 2 tsp chia seeds

  • 2 tbsp coconut yogurt

  • 1 cup of coconut milk,

  • 1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon.

  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter

  • dollop of blueberry compote (1/2 cup frozen blueberries with 2 tbsp of water brought to a boil and then allowed to cool for thickness).

Soak the oats, chia, yogurt, coconut milk, and spices together in a glass jar overnight. Top with compote, fruit, and peanut butter in the morning.
