Inspiration: Nicole Modic

This month I had the honour to interview Nicole Modic, or as you may know her as the famous kalejunkie. Nicole is a health, wellness, and mindful influencer who is inspiring a wave of positivity and self love. Nicole, as a mother of two adorable boys has a fun and balanced approach to embodying a healthy lifestyle which is beyond her beautiful bowls. Nicole is the prime example of what it means to live balanced, as she founded her platform while healing from an eating disorder and used Instagram as a creative outlet to share her journey, and along the way she has inspired myself and many others to find what balance truly means; mind, body, and spirit. I am so incredibly honoured to have had the opportunity to interview Nicole Modic (aka a complete girl boss) and I hope that you find her as inspiring and uplifting as I do!

NAME: NICOLE MODIC

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I’m originally from Los Angeles, CA, and I moved to San Francisco about 5 years ago. My ethnic background is Armenian J.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START KALE JUNKIE?

I started @Kalejunkie as a place to document my meals and help keep me accountable to making healthy food choices. I started @Kalejunkie while I was on maternity leave after having my first son (3 years ago), and while it’s evolved over time into more of a lifestyle brand, it’s been a constant in my life ever since.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

Don’t laugh. When I first started my healthy food account, my handle was @marin_veganista. At the time I was vegan and I live in Marin county, in California. Realizing that I was no longer a vegan and I wanted something to capture my love for KALE and more, @kalejunkie was born.

WHERE DO YOU GET ALL OF YOUR AMAZING RECIPE IDEAS FROM?

I get my recipe ideas from other bloggers, Pinterest, and simply by playing in the kitchen and combining different ingredients. Being in the kitchen is my kind of free therapy – it clears my mind and allows me a creative space to test my ideas.

YOU OFTEN TALK ABOUT MINDFULNESS, WHEN DID YOU START TO BECOME MORE MINDFUL/WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME MORE IN-TUNE WITH YOUR MIND AND BODY?

I started practicing more mindfulness when I started to heal myself from an eating disorder. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head and I realized a legit connection between mind and body. By incorporating more mindfulness and self-love practices into my own life, I was able to find true food freedom.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO GET YOUR BODY MOVING?

I always have to start the day with some form of exercise. This helps keep my mind and body strong, and sets the tone for the whole day. I feel happier and my mood is lighter – exercise, just like my time in the kitchen, is my therapy. These days, my favorite workouts are strength training, Barry’s bootcamp, and Pilates; though hot yoga will always have my heart.

WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?

My food philosophy is to just each REAL FOOD – i.e. few ingredients, minimal processing, always non-GMO and mostly organic. I believe deeply that we need to ditch the concept of dieting, and focus more on the types of foods we eat, and to eat intuitively and according to what your body is craving (hopefully that’s lots of fruits and veggies). I’m also about balance – so hey, you want a donut and the ingredients aren’t clean, go for it, and don’t beat yourself up over it. Just make smarter choices the next day!

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

My two little boys. They inspire me to always be my best! And my yoga teacher/guru, Stephanie Snyder – we all need a teacher in our lives, to keep us accountable, humble, and always a student.

WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

Helping others find their way and achieve their dreams. I get countless emails from people struggling with food issues, body confidence issues, or overall just feeling stuck in an unfulfilling career. It brings me the greatest joy when I can touch just one person’s life and share with them my tips and suggestions for healing and/or getting unstuck.

FAVOURITE QUOTE:

“Anything worth doing, is worth doing well” – My mom always said this to me growing up and it’s stuck with me over the years. It’s basically a reminder not to “half ass” anything and always give 100%.

YOU ARE FROM SAN FRANCISCO, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE CAFÉS THAT ARE A MUST IF IN YOUR CITY?

Little Gem

Blue Barn

Jane on Fillmore

As Quoted

Nourish Café

Asha Teahouse – best matcha ever!

SINCE YOU ARE A PARENT AND ARE AN INSPIRING ADVOCATE FOR HEALTHY EATING, WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU WOULD GIVE TO PARENTS WHO ARE TRYING TO GET THEIR CHILDREN TO EAT A MORE WHOLESOME AND BALANCED DIET?

The best tip I can share is to SNEAK those veggies into their diet. My 3 year old is the world’s pickiest eater.
